Mountain Biking (VTT )

In the heart of the Hautes-Alpes, La Grave offers access to some of Frances most truly spectacular and challenging mountain biking. In addition, unlike some of the better known (and crowded) Alpine biking centres, La Grave is situated in a completely unspoilt area adjacent to the Ecrins National Park.

The majority of the riding is above the tree line, across Alpine meadows with views across to some of the most technical and picturesque mountains in the Alps. With Montagnard providing uplifts and collections on road, you can ride some of the most awe inspiring descents in the Alps - such as the off-road descent of the Col du Galibier.

With accommodation and a base in the La Grave area, you have immediate access to a wide range of riding from easy open paths to the most technical single track - for example:

  • In summer (June-Sept) the telepherique at La Grave provides uplift and some technical downhill on La Meije - doesn't get much better than this!
  • Numerous local circuits and routes up to 40km with up to 1200m climbing - either on single track or forest type road.
  • 15km descent off road from the famous Col du Galibier.
  • Beautiful valley tours - non technical but visiting some lovely alpine villages and remote Alpine scenery.

For the hardened riders there are:
  • The classic and ultimate test of le Defi du Galibier - 90km route with 3587m descent (oh and 2412m ascent) which kicks off from the top of the Col du Galibier.
  • Access to the uplift and downhilll/XC areas of La Grave, Serre Chevalier, Alpe D'Huez and les Deux Alpes, all of which off uplift in summer season - and at a much more reasonable rate than some others!

Montagnard Activities can offer biking on a fully guided basis or on an accommodation, information and uplift package. A typical weeks stay would involve an initial warm-up day to get acclimatised to the area and altitude, two days XC tours on remote single track, two days downhill in nearby resorts, and a day on one of the mega col descents.

For those with road bikes it is possible to re-live those 'Tour de France'
moments and visit the road climbs of Alpe D'Huez, Les 2 Alpes and the Col du Galibier, with on road support to help you along!

For family and mixed groups, there are plenty of other supplemental activities such as walking, climbing and rafting which can be combined with biking activities. For experienced VTT alpinistes we can suggest some multiday hut to hut itineraries which will challenge even the fittest and technically competent riders.

With cheap flights to the nearby airports of Grenoble, Chambery, Lyon and Turin a long weekend is a possibility!!
